Let the Right One In
Let the Right One in is a Swedish horror film based on a 2004 novel. It follows two outsider twelve-year-olds and their vampire on human love. No cheese, a healthy amount of gore, and a happy ending, sort of. Oskar, the main character, is a bullied young man with a decided taste for violence and vengeance. His vampire Eli encourages him to hit back, hard and their friendship soon turns into Oskar's crush.
And when they're not hanging out, Eli is going around tearing people apart.
It really is a compelling way to look at the classic tale of vampires. The childish tone of it all just adds to the sinister affect. The movie is slow to start, it is pretty artsy, lots of shots of blood being spilled and pre-teen bodies (you even see indiscriminate vampire private parts). It also shows the outskirts of Sweden in a dark and beautiful way, draping the landscapes in snow in the darkness of night which seems to come in the afternoon.
It is an excellent film and is available on Watch Instantly now on netflix. They're making an English version in 2010 but I'm going to assume the original is better, so go now.
Also on Watch Instantly, Singin' in the Rain. So fucking good.
