Fat City is the best boxing movie

This is with out a doubt the best and most realistic boxing movie ever, and one of John Huston's most complex and subtle movies. Everything in this film from the script to the cinematography is near perfection. What truly stands out though are the performances by the three main actors. Jeff Bridges is excellent as an up and coming young boxer, and Susan Tyrell, who won an oscar for Fat City, is amazing. But the real reason to see this film is for the perfect performance that Stacy Keach delivers as aging boxer and skidrow alchohlic Tully.

The Great Happiness Space

If you have Netflix watch this through their watch instantly feature. If not then go out and get this movie. This is one of the best documentaries to come out in a long time. Director Jake Clennell dives into the incredibly strange world of Japanese "host boys", which are a strange sort of prostitute that sell love and affection, not necessarily sex. Clennel takes no sides whatsoever in this film, he lets everyone, host boys and their clients, have a say and never inserts his own feelings into the movie. This is extremely rewarding if you are a fan of the documentary genre. As of lately douche bags like Micheal Moore have ruined documentaries by allowing himself and his views to become the focus. Instead of documenting something, documentarians have begun to make propaganda films about whatever their dumb misinformed agenda fueled group of friends think. People don't want to see "documentaries" showing how crazy and stupid conservatives and liberals are. Watch something real like this movie.

Less Than Zero

This was American Psycho writer Bret Easton Ellis' first novel that he wrote while still in college. The semi-autobiography about life in L.A. is one of the most realistic portraits of 80's lifestyle, while at the same time it still maintains Ellis' style of absurdity and extreme violence.

The Furies

This little known classic by Anthony Mann, is truly worth your time. Barbara Stanwyck and Walter Huston, in his final role, give the performances of a life time as dueling father and daughter. While the ending is some what flawed, the unnerving sexual tension between the two is chilling, and the noir quality to the movie makes it a western in a league of its own. This powerful western was just released on Criterion and is worth every penny.

Surviving is the only glory in war. - Sam Fuller

For anyone who does not know about Sam Fuller, go out as soon as you can and pick up one of his movies. He was a true independent film director way before people like Charles Gary Allison and Robert Redford paved the way for anyone with a half decent "quirky" idea to become a great director. Fuller wrote directed and produced almost every film he was associated with, and pioneered the "Primitive Style" of directing. Fuck Juno, watch a real movie by a legendary director.
